Alan has advised on intellectual property rights throughout his career with Bristows of more than 35 years. His experience extends across all industries and IP rights. He is a very experienced litigator, particularly in patent matters, having led numerous cases which have gone to trial in the Patents Court and Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (formerly the Patents County Court). Alan is a qualified Solicitor-Advocate with full rights of audience before all the UK’s civil courts.
Alan has advised many prestigious clients in technically complex disputes ranging from pharmaceuticals to telecoms. (His telecoms experience includes SEP / FRAND issues, and Alan was one of the partners acting for Samsung in the UK part of the Unwired Planet v Huawei, Samsung and Google litigation.) He has experience of all types of patent matters, from infringement and revocation matters, to entitlement and employee compensation. Many of his cases involve an international, multi-jurisdictional element, and he is also experienced in dealing with the relationship between UK and EPO litigation.
Alan is Secretary of the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court Users’ Committee (2001 to date); member and former Chair (2001-2005) of the IP Committee of AmCham EU (the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union). Alan is Bristows’ representative on the Council of IP Federation (the leading UK industry body concerned with intellectual property policy).
Alan has followed developments relating to what we now know as the UPC since 1999 and is a regular speaker and commentator on the topic. He has advised the UK IPO on UK Government policy in this area for over a decade and is a member of AIPPI’s standing committee on the unitary patent and UPC which he chaired from 2014 to 2016.
